Kailoni grew up in the mountains of Southern California. Because of this, she loves both mountains and the beach!
I was born in Indiana and lived there for a few years before moving to Pittsburgh, PA for ten years. When I was fourteen my dad, a civil engineer, got a job in Indonesia, and we lived in a small village in the mountains for two years. This was quite an education! When we came back to the USA, we moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Because this was where we had visited every year despite moving around a lot, if you ask me where I am from, I will say Michigan–even though I did not live there until I was sixteen!
Our paths crossed in 2001 when Kailoni and I both went to college at Chicago’s Moody Bible Institute. Kailoni’s major was Evangelism and Discipleship, while I focused on Pastoral Studies. We met each other on the first day when we sat next to each other in the same class.
We got to know each other over the next several years as we worked together on the same open-air evangelism team. We led outreaches to the streets of Chicago as well as a children’s ministry in nearby Cabrini Green. Eventually our friendship blossomed into romance, and we got engaged on Christmas Eve, 2004.
After graduation in 2005, I began working back at my home church in Marquette, Michigan. That July I flew out to meet Kailoni in Lake Arrowhead, California where we were married on July 23, 2005.
On January 2, 2008, Josiah joined us as the newest member of our family. He started life in a very punctual manner, being born exactly on his due date–a feat only 2% of the population can claim.
I learned a lot over the three-and-a-half years at our church, and as I preached more and more I realized that I wanted to be a senior pastor. Because I wanted further theological training, we decided to come to Dallas Theological Seminary, and we moved south in January of 2009.
In July of 2010 our family grew again as we welcomed Christopher to the world. He was born so fast that the doctor didn’t have time to put her shoes on!
In September, 2012 we had Anastasia join our family. She was the smallest of all our babies, and Chavi declared it the best day of her life when she first got to hold Anastasia.
In November, 2015 we got another little girl, Aletheia Jane. She is a real hit, and her brothers and sisters fight over who gets to hold her!
In our spare time, we have more hobbies than we could possibly have time for. Kailoni has five hobbies in particular: Chavalah, Josiah, Christopher, Anastasia, and Aletheia. Beyond that, she enjoys reading, backpacking, and photography. Chavalah likes drawing, playing with friends, and singing. Josiah likes hiking, playing Dad’s miniature tabletop war games, Minecraft, and running around outside. Christopher likes playing with his brothers and sisters and wearing camouflage. Annie likes playing with dollies–especially with her new baby sister. So far, Aletheia just likes eating and sleeping.
Since Kailoni and I were both homeschooled, we wanted to provide the same great experience to our children. Even Annie likes to do what she calls “my math” (mazes, drawing, or whatever).
